14th 1999 - "Man this feels great" said a very relieved Don Thomspn Jr, moments after driving his #4 Home Hardware Chevy to a conservative 5th place finish in the CARQUEST 200 at New Brunswick International Speedway. That finish, gave the Home team their first ever CASCAR title, the Eastern Canadian Championship. "We finished second in the National standings and won the East, that's not a bad season" Thomson said, adding "we're so happy right now, everyone on this team, Home Hardware and John Fitzpatrick (car owner). We'll take a few days to let it sink in and then take the off season to build on this. This has been a long time coming, all those years and finally, a title, wow". The #4 Home Hardware team entered the final race of
1999 with a slim 22 point lead over the charging #77 of
Peter Vanderwyst but they got off to a great start,
posting the 6th fastest qualifying time vs a 9th for
Vanderwyst. The qualifying heat race saw Thomson gain a
few more points, finishing 2nd to Vanderwysts' 3rd. So
the stage was then set going into the CARQUEST 200 with
Don Thomson needing only a top 10 finish to claim the
title, thus the conservative run. Adding to the pressure
was a full, corporate tent of Atlantic Canada Home
Hardware boosters sitting just off of turn two. The team
didn't disappoint and their greatest fears, a flat tire
or a wreck were never realized. As for future plans, "we plan on taking a road course school this winter and even an oval course. That should help us more for next year. I still can't believe the year we had, it'll sink in in a few days I'm sure" said Thomson at the post race celebration reception. The team is not 100% sure if he'll enter the Sportsman Invitational 150 at Delaware Speedway September 24 and 25th. The #4 Home Hardware team is the two time defending winner of this event and if they come up with a Sportsman motor, they'll be there looking to three peat. "Car owner John Fitzpatrick (#14 Planet Snak/Nabisco Chev) offered his congratulations to Don Thomson, adding "we knew we had picked the right driver all along and we're just so happy for this team, for Don and for Home Hardware. Thanks to everyone who helped us this year".
